Description

Auson Äkta Trätjära 850 Pine Tar | Natural Wood Preserver for Wooden Facades, Fences & Boats

The timeless, natural wood preserver for deep, lasting protection on all your outdoor wood projects.

  • Traditional, Natural Protection: Made from resinous pinewood, this is a time-tested, eco-friendly way to preserve your outdoor wood against weather, moisture, and rot.
  • Deep Penetrating Formula: Unlike surface-level coatings, our pine tar soaks deep into the wood grain, preventing drying, cracking, and decay from the inside out.
  • Versatile for All Outdoor Wood: Perfect for a wide range of DIY projects, from treating wooden house facades and fences to protecting wooden boats, jetties, and garden structures.
  • Beautiful Dark Finish: Creates a classic, dark brown matte finish that enhances the natural beauty of the wood while providing robust, long-lasting protection.

Give your outdoor wood the timeless protection it deserves with Auson Äkta Trätjära 850, a genuine, oven-burnt pine tar based on centuries of Scandinavian tradition. If you’re looking for a natural and effective way to preserve your wooden fences, facade, or even your boat, this is the ultimate solution for your DIY project.

Our pine tar works by penetrating deep into the wood, nourishing the fibres and creating a barrier that protects against the harsh European climate. It prevents the wood from drying out and cracking while allowing it to breathe, which stops moisture from getting trapped and causing rot. The result is a durable, water-resistant surface that will stand the test of time.

Unleash your creativity on a variety of projects. Bring an old wooden fence back to life, give your garden shed a classic, protective finish, or provide your wooden boat with the traditional treatment used by seafarers for generations. Äkta Trätjära 850 is suitable for both untreated wood and wood that has been previously treated with pine tar, ensuring a consistent and beautiful result.

For an easier application, the tar can be gently heated or thinned, allowing it to flow smoothly from the brush and absorb even better into the wood. This simple step makes it easy for anyone to achieve a professional-quality finish.

Choose Äkta Trätjära 850 for a finish that is not only beautiful and protective but also honours the heritage of natural wood care. Protect your investment and enjoy the rich, dark brown character it brings to your home and garden.

Technical Information

  • Colour: Dark Brown
  • Composition: Dark oven-burnt pine tar from resinous pinewood
  • Density: 1.00 ± 0.03 kg/litre
  • Coverage First Coat: 2-4 m²/litre, depending on surface
  • Coverage Second Coat: 4-8 m²/litre, depending on surface
  • Drying Time: Absorbs into the wood rather than forming a film. The surface feels dry after a few days to several weeks, depending on weather, wood type, and application thickness.
  • Thinner: Gum turpentine or spirit. Do not use mineral turpentine.
  • Cleaning of tools: Gum turpentine, spirit, or soap and water.

How-To Steps

  1. Surface Preparation: Ensure the wood is clean and dry.
  2. Improve Applicability (Optional): For easier application and better penetration, gently warm the pine tar in a water bath to approximately 50-70°C, or thin it with gum turpentine or raw/boiled linseed oil.
  3. Application: Use a brush to apply a thin, even coat. Work the tar into the wood, especially on end grains. Avoid applying too thickly, as this can cause cracking or ‘bleeding’ in hot weather.
  4. Ventilation: Always apply outdoors and ensure good air circulation during application and drying.

Recommendations

Apply thin coats for the best result. For improved penetration on dense wood, thinning with gum turpentine is recommended. Can be used on untreated wood or wood previously treated with pine tar, iron vitriol, or distemper paint. Historically used for veterinary and pharmaceutical purposes.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is this different from modern wood stains or paints?

Äkta Trätjära is a natural product that soaks into the wood to protect it from within, allowing it to breathe. Paints and some stains form a film on the surface, which can trap moisture and eventually peel or flake. Pine tar offers a more traditional, long-lasting protection.

What is the final colour?

It provides a beautiful, classic dark brown finish. The final shade can vary slightly depending on the type of wood, its absorbency, and the number of coats applied.

Does it have a strong smell?

Yes, pine tar has a distinct, traditional smoky aroma from the kiln-burning process. The smell is strongest during application and will lessen significantly as it cures. We always recommend applying it outdoors.

How often do I need to re-apply it?

The re-application interval depends on the exposure to sun and weather. For highly exposed surfaces like south-facing walls, a maintenance coat might be needed every 5-7 years. In less exposed areas, it can last much longer.
