How-To Steps
- Surface Preparation: Remove oil, grease, and salts. For steel, blast clean to grade Sa2½ (ISO 8501-1). For zinc and aluminium, sweep blast clean with mineral or non-metallic abrasives to create an even roughness.
- Mixing: Stir base and hardener separately. Mix thoroughly in a 4:1 base-to-hardener volume ratio using a power mixer. Insufficient mixing will impair performance.
- Application: Apply via airless spray, thinning 0-15% with Thinner 1031. Recommended nozzle tip is 0.011″-0.017″ at 120-160 bar pressure. Brush application is suitable only for stripe coating. Ensure substrate temperature is at least 3°C above dew point.
Recommendations
Ensure good ventilation in confined areas during application and drying. The product should not be applied at temperatures below 0°C, where ice may form on the substrate. For applications requiring high aesthetic standards on color and gloss retention, it is recommended to use a polyurethane topcoat.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the maximum overcoating interval for Temacoat GPL-S Primer without needing to abrade the surface?
The primer can be overcoated without roughening for up to 6 months after application, providing significant flexibility in project scheduling.
Is this primer suitable for use on galvanized steel surfaces?
Yes, it adheres exceptionally well to zinc surfaces. For hot-dip galvanized steel, the surface must be prepared by sweep blasting with mineral abrasives as per SFS 5873.
Which topcoats are compatible with this primer?
Temacoat GPL-S Primer can be used as a primer or intermediate coat for a wide range of topcoats, including epoxy and polyurethane paint systems such as Temacoat, Temadur, and Temathane.
Can Temacoat GPL-S Primer be tinted?
Yes, the primer is tintable to a wide range of colors. This helps achieve better hiding power and opacity in the subsequent topcoat, potentially reducing the number of coats needed.
